Heartbreaking Touch Down
Billy enjoyed all sports especially football. Billy watched every type of game that he came across on the internet and on TV.
Billy often dreamed of being on the field with the players as he watched the games.
This fantasy world of his, was a way of life for Billy.
Billy's life was very similar to most of the other boys that was his age, with one exception. Billy had Muscular Dystrophy and he was unable to walk and run like other boys his age.
At age thirteen Billy was confined to a wheel chair. He still attended school thanks to insurance, organizations that contributed to his financial needs and a school system that allowed him to continue to go.
Billy always had a smile on his face, and when anyone came near him he would get excited. He talked endlessly about all of the sports games that he watched.
Billy knew all of the players on all of the teams that he watched by name.
During this time that he has spent in his wheel chair Billy has found himself to be the proud owner of various Jerseys from the players of some of his most favorite teams.
His collection includes books of the players cards, hats, baseballs, bats, and footballs.
One Sunday evening after everyone in the house had finished dinner, Billy was getting all excited about a football game that was coming on.
As Billy turned on the TV to watch the game, his dad stuck his head in the door and exclaimed to Billy that the Cowboys were going to win! Billy's laughter could be heard all down the hallway of the big old house.
Billy watched the game intensely. The teams were neck in neck all throughout the game. The cowboys would score and then the other team would score. It just kept going back and forth like that for the entire game.
Finally in the last quarter with time ticking away faster and faster Dallas got the ball away from their opponent's team and run down the field and scored the final touchdown of the game.
Billy was ecstatic with the outcome of the game. Monday morning rolled around and you guessed it before the teacher even had a chance to make it to the class room, Billy was already telling all of his classmates blow by blow exactly how the game with the Cowboys had went the day before.
It was exciting to all of the other children also. They all often wondered how Billy felt about having to be in a wheel chair, they actually worried that it may depress him or make him feel resentful because they could walk and he couldn't.
This preoccupation that Billy had with sports eased the children's fears somewhat. And they didn't mind hearing about all of the games that Billy watched.
For some reason Mrs. Coffee was late to class that day. But the children hadn't noticed because they were mesmerized by the story that Billy was telling about the Cowboy game.
Finally Mrs. Coffee showed up for class but she wasn't alone. There was a man out in the hallway that the children could hear him talking with Mrs. Coffee but they could not see him.
After talking with the gentleman for a moment she turned and faced the classroom. As she was coming through the doorway she said to the class. Class I want you all to welcome a fan of Billy's that he did not know that he had. At that moment the man walked into the room coming along behind Mrs. Coffee.
Just the smile on Billy's face and the looks on all of the children's faces was enough to make the quarterback for the Cowboys smile back.
He came in the classroom and said Billy I have heard a lot about you around the club house and it is my privilege and honor to give you this winning football from yesterday's game. It has been autographed by all of the players on the team.
Billy was speechless not knowing what to say finally he managed to get out one word. Me? You heard about me? How? Why?
Well Billy it is not everyday that sports players have fans that are as serious as you are. All of the people that you sent to the games to help you with your collections really love and care for you.
They have told the players over and over about what a special little boy that you are with your dedication for sports. They also believe that you are fearless for being able to come to school and still learn with all of your friends when you could have just home schooled.
Mrs. Coffee the man said I must be going, I just want to thank you for letting me drop by today. As the man made his way out of the school door, everyone in the classroom heard the statement that Mrs. Coffee said as she shook her head. Unbelievable she said, just unbelievable!
